Wickenden Street, Providence: Shops, Galleries and Fox Point History
Wickenden Street runs through Fox Point at the bottom of College Hill, a few minutes’ walk from Brown and RISD. It’s known for independent shops, art galleries and restaurants, and is popular with local artists, professors and students.
Wickenden Street’s history
- It’s named for William Wickenden, a minister and one of Providence’s first settlers in the 1600s, who farmed the land the street now runs through.
- From the 1800s Fox Point was home to a large Portuguese-American community. One of the first Portuguese-American churches in the area was organized here in 1885, and some houses on the street are still painted in the pastel colors of the Portuguese style.
Nearby
Fox Point runs down to the water along South Water Street, where Al Forno is, and up the hill to Thayer Street. On WaterFire nights it’s an easy walk to the rivers downtown.
