Things to Do in Fox Point and the East Side

Photo: Waz8 (CC0)

Across the river from downtown, Fox Point and the East Side mix the waterfront along South Water Street with the college streets of College Hill. WaterFire suggests parking up here on lighting nights and walking down the hill to the river.

Streets to explore

  • Wickenden Street: Fox Point’s main street of independent shops, galleries and restaurants, named for William Wickenden, one of Providence’s first settlers.
  • Thayer Street: College Hill’s main street beside Brown University, home of the Art Deco Avon Cinema, which opened in 1938.
  • Benefit Street: the historic street of 18th- and 19th-century houses, the Providence Athenaeum and the Old State House, built in 1762.

Where to eat

  • Al Forno, 577 South Water Street, by the Providence River. Dinner Tuesday through Saturday, per its site.
  • Persimmon, 99 Hope Street: indoor dining and take-out, with seasonal cocktails that can be made alcohol-free.
  • Pizza Marvin, 468 Wickenden Street: “a modern house of pizza,” in its own words.
